Modernism-Postmodernism Reading

When I initially began the “Modernism-Postmodernism” reading, it made me realize how our art movements can turn into a constant cycle of each other while adding new meaning and ideas to each movement. There always seems to be room for improvement, and the way it recycles ideas by creating new ones is like the theme of this class(remix). I really like the initial piece shown, Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Diptych,” because that was one of the pieces of art that made me really want to pursue digital as a medium after we used it as inspiration for one of my first assignments in my graphic design class in high school. I think that the initial impact that piece had was also very impressive because it is so weird to believe that a lot of art today is taking a piece of pop culture and turning it into something new. Another thing I liked about the reading was the mention of the distinction between high and low culture, primarily how, in postmodernism, they use the idea of low culture as their means of inspiration and subjects because it relates to what I said about Warhol’s work. It also made me realize how much my favorite artists use that same idea; for example, I recently came across an artist on Instagram whose page is valeria.aparte. Many of her oil paintings take characters or inspiration from popular media, my favorite being her renditions of Juan Carlos Bodoque from the Chilean show 31 minutos.
